Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (MACSI) PhD position
The twin issues of climate change and energy supply security are placing an increasing importance on research in the field of Energy. The field is a truly inter-disciplinary one covering areas such as finance and economics, sociology and politics and technical engineering. Applied Mathematics can contribute greatly to understanding and quantifying all of these aspects.
The PhD would consist of a number of modules around a general theme of quantifying or valuing the importance of flexibility and responsiveness in dealing with peak or extreme events. Modules could include
- Impact of increased wind generation in the Irish electricity market
- Modelling of peak gas or electricity demand
- Evaluation of flexible or responsive resources, such as peaking power plants, gas storage or gas swing contracts
- Electricity market design
The work would either develop novel techniques, or extend and adapt existing techniques to the Irish context. These could include
- Optimization (Integer, linear or non-linear programming)
- Stochastic optimization/dynamic programming
- Probability/stochastic processes
- Statistics/data mining
This PhD will be in collaboration with Bord Gáis Energy, a leading Irish integrated gas and power utility and could include work placements there.
Candidate Profile
Prospective applicants should have a strong mathematical background, resourcefulness in tracking down and interpreting data, and some interest in Energy and the related disciplines. In addition, the candidate should be a team player who is capable of working with a minimum of supervision.
Stipend
University fees will be covered and the position carries an annual stipend of €18,000 (tax free). Appointment commencing in Autumn 2009 is highly desirable. MACSI at UL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and a stimulating research environment.
