The use of Stochastic differential equations in Automatic control

Learning about stochastic differential equations has long been a problem for people whose primary interests lie in applications. On one hand, the subject can quickly become highly technical and if mathematical concerns are allowed to dominate, while on the other hand the treatment of stochastic calculus in a cavalier fashion leaves one with a feeling of great uncertainty when it comes to exploring new material. This issue has become more acute as the power of the differential equation point of view has become more evident. In this talk, an attempt will be made to resolve this dilemma keeping in mind the needs of those interested in building models and designing algorithms for applications. The Poisson counter and differential equations whose right-hand sides include the differential of Poisson counters are developed first. This leads to the construction of a sample path representation of a continuous time jump process using Poisson counters. This point of view leads to an efficient problem solving technique and permits a unified treatment of time varying and nonlinear problems. More importantly, it provides a relatively easy path to the treatment of Wiener processes and the full Ito calculus.

Roger Brockett bắt đầu làm việc tại Khoa Kỹ thuật Điện của Massachusetts Institute of Technology năm 1963 trong lĩnh vực điều khiển tự động. Năm 1969 ông được phong hàm Giáo sư Toán Ứng dụng tại Harvard, sau đó là An Wang Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences năm 1989. Các khía cạnh thực nghiệm và lý thuyết của robotics, trong đó có điều khiển bằng máy tính và tổng hợp dữ liệu cảm ứng, là hướng mà ông đang tập trung nghiên cứu.

Năm 1996 ông được trao giải thưởng Reid Prize của SIAM (Hội Toán Công nghiệp và Ứng dụng Mỹ) cho công trình về phương trình vi phân và điều khiển. Ông được bầu vào National Academy of Engineering năm 1991.
