Memorandum of Understanding

Between

Department of Mathematics

North Carolina State University

Raleigh, North Carolina

United States of America

And

Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

University of Natural Sciences

National University – Ho Chi Minh City

Socialist Republic of Vietnam

In order to enhance the educational capabilities of each of the above departments, it is proposed that collaborations and exchanges be formalized in the fields of mathematics and applied mathematics. This Mathematics Exchange Program will serve to provide highly qualified graduate students from University of Natural Sciences graduate training leading to a Ph.D. degree in mathematics or applied mathematics from North Carolina State University. This program, which is initiated through this agreement, is based on a spirit of cooperation, reciprocity, and of mutual benefits to both parties.

Program Description

In the first two years of this program, graduate students will take equivalent graduate level courses in mathematics from University of Natural Sciences that will count toward a MS degree from University of Natural Sciences and will prepare them for the PhD Written Qualifying Examination from the Department of Mathematics at North Carolina State University. The Qualifying Examination, which will be administered by a faculty from North Carolina State University, will be written exams in three subject areas selected by the student from a list of thirteen possibilities as described on departmental web site, http://www.math.ncsu.edu/grad/phd/course_req.php#Quals. After passing the qualifying examination and satisfying the requirement for a MS degree from University of Natural Sciences, the student will have to formally apply to the graduate program at North Carolina State University by following the application procedure as described in http://www.math.ncsu.edu/grad/intinfo.php. If the student’s application is successful, the student will be admitted into the graduate program at North Carolina State University in mathematics or applied mathematics with financial support.

Course Credits

Since admitted students into the Mathematics Exchange Program would have received a MS degree from University of Natural Sciences, they will get 18 hours credit for the MS degree and would only need a minimum of 54 credit hours of courses at North Carolina State University.

Financial Support

The support will be a half-time teaching assistantship, a research assistantship, or a fellowship, depending on the qualification of the student. Continued support is contingent upon:

·        maintaining satisfactory academic progress

·        satisfactory performance of your assistantship duties.

The department of mathematics at North Carolina State University would normally commit financial support to 3 full years. Students who exceed this time limit of support might be offered positions as lecture assistants or one-third-time teaching assistants for one additional year, with no commitment of future support.

The financial support does not include funds for airfare for traveling between Vietnam and the US.

Program Limitation

To maintain the diversity in its student population, this Mathematics Exchange Program will limit the number of admitted students from University of Natural Sciences to two (2) students per year.

Terms of Agreement

This agreement will remain in effect for five (5) years from the date of signing, and is renewable thereafter for five-year terms subject to mutual consent. Either party may terminate this agreement by giving at least six months notice in writing to the other party.
